Catharine Chen is a freelance editor based in Toronto, Ontario. She currently does contract work conducting substantive edits, stylistic edits, copy edits, proofreads, and editorial assessments for HarperCollins Canada, Strong Finish Editorial, Author Solutions, and private clients. She has experience editing books of nonfiction and fiction—literary, popular, young adult—and is familiar with Chicago, Oxford, and Canadian styles.
A native Vancouverite, she holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and has completed the Publishing Program at Ryerson University. She has interned at HarperCollins Canada and Random House Canada and has received the Marsh Jeanneret Memorial Award for demonstrated promise in the publishing industry and the Claudette Upton Scholarship for aptitude in and commitment to editing.
She has previously worked as an English tutor, as Fiction Editor of PRISM international, at the Playwrights Theatre Centre, at the Vancouver Writers Festival, in screenplay development, in communications, and in administration.
